3D Printing is now public!

August 2, 2008

Shapeways, A new online service is now allowing the public to upload 3D designs which will be then printed by a 3D printer.

A 3D printer is a printer capable of making 3D objects, usually out of plastic.
You can make the 3D design in Google SketchUp, There are lots of tutorials on using SketchUp on the web.

Shapeways is the perfect service for most hoppyists, You upload your 3D design, Pay between $50-$150 depending on your design, 3D printers make your object and it is shipped to you in 10 days.

Objects the 3D printers make are built in one piece and can include moving parts, “You can even make a working clock,” Weijmarshausen says.

There is a rumour going around on the internet that it is possible to make your own cheap 3D printer using household products, more on that here.

Wonder what the MS paperclip would say about this! “looks like you are trying to print a toilet seat, would you like me to help you…” :(

Got something to say?
